HEALTH & SAFETY ASSOCIATION REALIGNMENT
During our most recent Annual Meeting we noted that 2009 is somewhat of a turning point, in that THSAO and the eleven other safe workplace associations have been participating in a realignment process initiated by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB). Under the terms of the realignment – recently approved by the WSIB Board of Directors - THSAO will be aligned with the existing Construction Safety Association (CSAO) and the Electrical Utilities and Safety Association (EUSA).
The deliberations and decisions leading to these developments are both complicated and yet to be concluded. Thus, the final picture has not been drawn.
While THSAO will be engaging in a communication outreach to our sector, in the near term, I do wish to emphasize that one of the founding objectives of the realignment model is to retain sector specificity at the front lines. For THSAO, one of the more sector-specific associations, this has been, and will remain, at the forefront of our thoughts as we continue with this process.
THSAO would like to express its appreciation to the THSAO Board, who continues to be extremely supportive of your association during this process, some of whom take time away from their professional responsibilities to participate in the necessary deliberations and discussions.

WSIB Releases Preliminary Average Premium Rate for 2009
The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) has announced the 2009 preliminary average premium rate for Schedule 1 employers. The WSIB Board of Directors' decision to keep the 2009 average premium rate at $2.26 - unchanged from 2007 and 2008 - is based on careful financial analysis, and an expectation that improvements will occur in health and safety and return to work outcomes consistent with the WSIB's Road to Zero and Prevention Strategies.

THSAO Sponsors Safe Communities Incentive Program (SCIP) - JOIN TODAY!
THSAO is now sponsoring a Safe Communities Incentive Program whereby firms are eligible to receive up to a 5% rebate of their annual WSIB premiums by completing 5 (4 hour) instruction sessions that will assist them in establishing a sound Health & Safety program in their workplace.
Firms are eligible for the THSAO sponsored SCIP program if they:
- Are paying less than $90,000 in annual WSIB premiums
- Have not previously participated in SCIP
- Are not a current Safety Groups Program member
- Are a THSAO member firm

The Hazard Prevention Program that forms Part XIX of the Canada Occupational Health and Safety Regulations (COHS Regulations) was amended Nov. 29/07 to include provisions for ergonomics-related hazards.
The impetus for the amendments came from the provisions in Part II of the Code, requiring federally-regulated employers to take the prescribed steps to prevent and protect against ergonomics-related hazards in the work place.
THSAO's Transportation Ergonomics course addresses many of the required issues.

CVOR Holders can request a review of CVOR accident points
The criteria has been expanded to include accidents where charges were laid but did not result in a conviction because the charge was dismissed, withdrawn, quashed, stayed or acquitted. The review is strictly an administrative process and shall in no manner be construed as evidentiary in any current or subsequent legal process. Appeals will be handled by the CVOR Accident Point Review Panel, administered by the Transportation Health & Safety Association of Ontario. Please be advised that accidents that do not result in convictions will no longer be recorded on a Driver’s CVOR abstract. Follow this link for more Review Panel details.
Ontario's New Highway Traffic Act Regulation 555/06 'Hours of Service'
The main objective of the new Regulations is to reduce the risk of fatigue-related commercial vehicle collisions by providing drivers with the opportunity to obtain additional rest. The Regulations also aim to reduce the complexity of the rules by making them easier to comply with and to enforce, for example through the reduction of the number of cycles and the elimination of the options to reduce off-duty time.
